With the final whistle of the football game on Thanksgiving Day, the Belmont High School Fall Sports season came to an end. Miss some of the action this past fall? Don’t fret, we have a full fall sports recap for you.
The Belmont High School Golf and Cheerleading Teams both received banners for winning the Middlesex League this fall. The Golf Team ended with an 11-2 record and with four League All-Stars: Joe Destefano, Henry Stonehouse, Patrick Kilcoyne, and David D’Agostino. D’Agostino was voted All-League too. Not to be outdone, the Liberty Division Champions, the Belmont High School Cheerleading Team, had three members who were named League All-Stars: Eliza Murtagh, Anna Biondo, and Kathryn Donovan.
Both the Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer teams finished with winning records in the highly competitive Middlesex League this year. Strangely enough, both teams were edged out 1-0 by Winchester in the Division II North Semifinals at Manning Field in Lynn, just days apart from each other. The two teams had a combined five Middlesex League All-Stars: Marina Karalis and Ashley Green for the girls; and Michael Ciano, Jon Brabo, and Ali Noorouzi for the boys. Karalis, Brabo, and Noorouzi also were awarded All-Conference. Karalis, who will be continuing her soccer career at Fairfield University next fall, was also placed on the All-State Team.
This fall was also incredibly successful for the Belmont High Football Team. Their victory against Watertown on Thanksgiving ended their season with a winning record for the first time in 10 years. Their wins were a team effort but six exceptional players were voted League All-Star: Chad Francis, Avery Arno, Justin Rocha, Ryan Santoro, Zachary Hubbard, and Ryan Hoffman. Hoffman was also voted All-League.
Another team who finished the fall season with an especially impressive record was the Field Hockey Team who went 13-2-1. This outstanding record led them to be ranked fourth in the state tournament where they unfortunately lost in the first round. The team had four League All-Stars: Katie Guden, Meaghan Noone, Emma O’Donovan, and Emma Donahue. Guden and Donahue were also voted All-League.
The Girls Swim Team was also incredibly successful this fall, with half of the team qualifying for sectionals. Especially notable were League All-Stars Marina Cataldo, Alexandra Zarkadas, Sammie Fogel, Chloe Park, and Alicia Lugovskoy, as well as Katarina Chen, who made All-Conference.
The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams had favorable seasons as well. Three seemed to be the Girls team’s lucky number, as they finished the season 3-3 and placed third at the Middlesex League Championship meet. There were only two League All-Stars, however, Isabel Burger and Joy He, which topped off a tremendous season for them and the team. The Boys team also had a strong season with a lot of underclassmen playing big roles. Senior Stephen Carvalho was named the Middlesex League MVP, a league All-Star, and voted to the All-Conference team.
The cherry on top of the successful fall season for Belmont High School was the Volleyball team, which qualified for the state tournament for the third year in a row. Senior Captains Mindee Lai and Sophia Estok were named All-Conference and All-State.
