This Halloween: Put Yourself In Someone Else's Shoes

By Sophia Liu and Anya Chen (BHS UNICEF Club Media Team) :

Did you know?

Americans are expected to spend almost 10 billion dollars nationwide on Halloween expenses this year. Just one tenth of that amount could improve the education and living conditions of thousands of children worldwide. This Halloween, as you pull on pirate boots, glass slippers, or a sparkly mermaid tail, put yourself in someone else’s shoes – consider stopping by UNICEF’s donation shoe boxes at your local elementary schools (Burbank, Butler, Wellington) between Nov 12–19th! Each cent you give counts towards a sweeter future for kids around the world.

What is UNICEF?

UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is a worldwide organization that works in more than 190 countries to help children by providing basic services like health care, education, food, water, protection, and more. This year, children need your help more than ever, with COVID-19 impacting areas with little access to the resources that can help battle this pandemic.

Why are we raising money?

Funds collected by Belmont High School’s UNICEF club will be used to support ACT-A, a global COVID relief collaboration. UNICEF, as the largest purchaser of vaccines each year, plays a role in leading the procurement and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to communities around the world.

Donations collected during the fundraiser will go towards purchasing supplies needed for combatting the pandemic. Examples: $1.80 buys two liters of hand soap, $37 is enough for two doses of vaccine for ten people, and $100.75 buys 325 face masks!

On average, BHS UNICEF Club raises more than $1,500 every Halloween – a little goes a long way!

How can you help?

Although there won’t be familiar orange "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" boxes this year

(as part of our COVID precautions minimizing person-to-person contact), your contributions are still crucial to UNICEF’s efforts to improve the lives of people everywhere. The BHS UNICEF Club will be collecting donations through shoeboxes placed at the elementary schools; you (or your child) can donate your spare change through the boxes. Another option is to make a donation digitally, using either the QR code or this link: bit.ly/totforunicef2021.
